Project Zomboid on Mac

Project Zomboid has an official Mac version - it is included with your Steam copy, so install that first. Hrava only earns its price if you also have other Windows-only games you want on the Mac.

Does Project Zomboid have a Mac version?

Yes - and you should try it before paying anyone, including us. The Indie Stone ships an official macOS build of Project Zomboid on Steam alongside Windows and Linux. If you own the game, the Mac version is already included - switch platform in Steam and play.

One caveat worth knowing: the Mac build runs on Java rather than as a native Apple Silicon application, so on M-series hardware it goes through an extra translation layer. For most players it is perfectly playable. Windows, macOS and Linux players share the same servers, so nothing splits your friends.

What to expect

Try the official build first

It is free with your existing Steam copy and needs nothing extra installed. There is no honest reason to pay $39 to play a game that already ships for your platform.

When Hrava actually helps

Not for this game alone - for the rest of your library. If Project Zomboid is one of several Windows-only titles you want on the Mac, Hrava covers the others in the same app. Bought only for Zomboid, it solves a problem you do not have.

If you do run the Windows build

Some heavily modded setups target the Windows build specifically. Hrava runs it with DXVK and no kernel-level anti-cheat is involved, so it works - but that is a narrow reason.

If you still want to run the Windows build

01

02

Connect Steam

Sign in to Steam inside Hrava and install Project Zomboid through the built-in SteamCMD.

03

Press “Play”

Hrava picks the engine (DXVK) and launches the game natively on your GPU. Optionally, export it as a standalone launcher.

Project Zomboid on Mac - FAQ

Does Project Zomboid have an official Mac version?

Yes. The Indie Stone publishes a macOS build on Steam next to Windows and Linux, and it is included with your existing purchase - there is nothing extra to buy. Switch platform in Steam and install it.

Is the Mac version native to Apple Silicon?

Not fully. The macOS build is Java-based rather than a native Apple Silicon application, so it runs through an additional translation layer on M-series Macs. In practice most players find it perfectly playable.

Can Mac players join Windows servers?

Yes. Windows, macOS and Linux builds are cross-compatible, so you can play on the same servers as friends on any platform.

Then why would I use Hrava for Project Zomboid?

For this game alone - you probably should not, and we would rather say so. Hrava earns its price when you have several Windows-only games you want on the Mac. If Zomboid is the only one, install the official Mac build instead.

What if I still want the Windows build?

It runs through Hrava with DXVK and there is no anti-cheat in the way. The 14-day money-back guarantee applies if it is not what you needed.
