Hrava

Whisky replacement

Whisky has stopped. Here is a maintained replacement

Whisky was a great free tool, but its development was wound down in April 2025 - the repository is archived, Wine 8+ updates are not coming, and the author himself recommends moving to paid solutions. Hrava is a maintained native successor on Apple Silicon for $39: the same "install and play", but alive and updated.

Short answer

Whisky did not "break" - it just stopped moving. It may still work on older games and macOS versions, but it will not get new releases, new macOS versions or Steam fixes anymore. If you are after that same "no terminal, just launch the game" feel, but with active support - Hrava does exactly that, and picks the graphics engine for each game itself on top. $39 one-time - play forever, with a 14-day money-back guarantee.

Whisky vs Hrava

Both are native SwiftUI apps built on Wine and Apple technologies. The difference is in maintenance and automation.

Honest about Whisky

Whisky was great - and here is what happened

Whisky did something big: it brought "play Windows games on a Mac without a terminal" to tens of thousands of people, with a beautiful native SwiftUI interface and 15k+ stars on GitHub. We respect it.

In April 2025 the author announced the end of development and archived the repository. The reason is an honest one: maintaining a free tool that rests on CrossOver/Wine is hard to do alone. He himself advised users to move to CrossOver. The community fork WhiskyWine is still somewhat alive, but it will not move to Wine 8+.

Bottom line: Whisky is not "bad" - it is just frozen in time. Hrava picks up the same idea, but with a team that updates the app for every new macOS and every new release.

Switching

Move over from Whisky in 3 steps

01

Download Hrava

One small .app. You don't have to delete your Whisky bottles - Hrava runs separately.

02

Connect Steam

Sign in once - Hrava installs games through its built-in SteamCMD and picks the engine itself.

03

Hit "play"

If you like, export a game as its own launcher into ~/Applications. 14-day money-back guarantee.

Honestly: when staying on Whisky/free is fine

If your games already run reliably in Whisky on your current macOS and you don't plan to upgrade or add new titles - the free Whisky may well keep serving you.

Hrava makes sense when you want live support, new games, new macOS versions and "just works" without manual engine tweaking - for the price of one game a year.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to use Whisky in 2026?

The app itself is safe (open source, GPL-3.0), but it has not been updated since April 2025 - it will not get new games, new macOS versions or Steam fixes, so over time more titles will break. For new games, a maintained solution is the better bet.

Whisky or Hrava - what is the main difference?

Whisky is free, but frozen, and requires manual engine selection. Hrava ($39) is actively updated, picks the best engine for each game itself, installs games from Steam and offers launcher export. In essence it is a maintained successor to the same idea.

Do I have to uninstall Whisky?

No. Hrava runs as a separate app with its own environment, so Whisky and its bottles can stay - they do not conflict.

Why was Whisky discontinued?

In April 2025 the developer announced he was stopping development (maintaining a free tool built on CrossOver/Wine is hard to do alone) and recommended switching to CrossOver. The repository has been archived.
